A strew slide from Yarra (various spellings over time Yarra Yarra, Yara, Yarra River Melbourne). Range of species including Actinocyclus sp., Hyalodiscus sp., Campylodiscus sp.. Very thin slide. Unknown maker. Olympus BHB microscope using 450nm LED light. I selected an example of a Hyalosidcus sp. (perhaps H. subtilis) for imaging at higher resolution with a 63x Leitz Pl Apo 1.4 objective, oil immersion. Olympus Aplanat Achromat condenser, oil immersion, oblique lighting. 2.5x Nikon CF PL photoeyepiece. Monochrome converted Nikon d850 camera. 80 images stacked in Zerene (Pmax). This is an underside view of the Hyalodiscus (and looks scarily like a clowns face…..).
Hyalodiscus subtilis Bailey 1854. Published in: Bailey, J.W. (1854). Notes on new species and localities of microscopical organisms. Smithsonian Contributions to Knowledge 7(3): 1-15, pl. 1. Page 10, Plate 1, Figure 12. This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Hyalodiscus scoticus (Kützing) Grunow. I got the name from Coates, J., 1860. On a Deposit of Diatomaceae at South Yarra. Trans. Roy. Soc. Vic. 5: 158-164.
I recently acquired about 30 more slides by this maker to add to the ones I already had, so if you want to see others by them, search for AAAAA in the Search option at the top of the page, and I’ll include this in each of the pages for them.
