“To see a world in a grain of sand”, William Blake

Welcome to Diatom Imaging, a resource for scientists, microscopists, artists and historians or indeed anyone who finds inspiration in the fantastic structures of the natural world.

This site will be an online museum covering the amazing work of diatomists old and new. I’ll be sharing high resolution optical microscope images of individual diatoms and arrangements along with providing information on how I captured them, as well as showing the slides themselves. This is an ongoing project and this will be added to over time, and I will be including resources on the microscopy and imaging process as well as my work to build and use a UV transmission microscope as it progresses. Note – I’ve found that the zoom function is not ideal on mobile devices, so I have disabled that for now while I evaluate options. Zoom works well on larger computer screens such as desktops or laptops.

Please use the ‘Search’ button at the top of the page to search the site. For instance you can type in diatom names or the names of the slide maker (try using the surname initially). Type “arrangement” (without the quotation marks) to look for slides with arrangements of diatoms.

On the site the images are shown with my company details on them (Copyright JMC Scientific Consulting Ltd). The images are available to buy and download without this watermark for your own private or commercial use. For more information and pricing for this please contact me.

However you want to enjoy this site please do so. I will be keeping this site advert free so if you would like to contribute to the running of this resource please use the Contribute link at the top of the page. I am also always on the lookout for interesting slides to image. If you think you may have items I would be interested in please contact me.
