Cymatopleura solea (Surirella librile)
Bernard Hartley slide 736

Two strew slides from Southease, Sussex. Collected by RI Firth, 4/6/1975. Cleaned by HG Gleave. Mounted in Aroclor and dated August 1975. One slide has just smaller forms. Range of species present. No makers name but this is by Bernard Hartley. Olympus BHB microscope using 450nm LED light. I chose one for imaging at high magnification. 40x Leitz Pl Apo 1.00 objective, oil immersion. Olympus Aplanat Achromat condenser, oil immersion, oblique lighting. 2.5x Nikon CF PL photoeyepiece. Monochrome converted Nikon d850 camera. 25 images stacked in Zerene (Pmax). I was restricted by the coverslip ring on this one, otherwise I would have used the 63x Leitz objective.

Cymatopleura solea (Brébisson) W.Smith 1851. Published in: Smith, W. (1851). Notes on the Diatomaceae, with descriptions of British species included in the genera Campylodiscus, Surirella and Cymatopleura. Annals and Magazine of Natural History, series 2 7: 1-14, pls I-III. Page 12, Plate 3, Figure 9. This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Surirella librile (Ehrenberg) Ehrenberg.

This was from the larger diatoms slide.

There is an entry from Bernard Hartley’s Sample and Strew Slide Collection PDF for this – slide 736 – accessed from here (also screenshotted above).
