An arrangement of diatoms from Dunkirk, Maryland. Dated December 1944. Prepared by Ernest Wainwright. No label to say what they are, however I think there are two Odontella weissflogii (top and side view), in between two Actinoptychus heliopelta. Olympus BHB microscope using 450nm LED light. For the Odontella diatoms, 63x Leitz Pl Apo 1.4 objective, oil immersion. Olympus Aplanat Achromat condenser, oil immersion, oblique lighting. 2.5x Nikon CF PL photoeyepiece. Monochrome converted Nikon d850 camera. Image stacks prepared in Zerene (Pmax), 53 images from the top view, and 94 images for the side view.

Interestingly, Mary noted that these do not look like typical Odontella, and could potentially be resting spores.
