Glyphodiscus scintillans, Richard Gosden

Glyphodiscus scintillans

Glyphodiscus sp. from Java Followed by (A.P.8. but not sure what that refers to). Looks to originally have been labelled G. grunowii, and then that has been crossed out and changed to G. scintillans. Single example on the slide with the underside facing the coverslip (rim facing upwards). Mounted in Naphrax with IX/61, which I presume is September 1961, aftwards. Prepared by Richard Gosden. Olympus BHB microscope using 450nm LED light. 63x Leitz Pl Apo 1.4 objective, oil immersion. Olympus Aplanat Achromat condenser, oil immersion, oblique lighting. 2.5x Nikon CF PL photoeyepiece. Monochrome converted Nikon d850 camera. 46 images stacked in Zerene (Pmax).

As for the name, on the label there is ‘AS’ after the name. This presumably is referring to Schmidt’s Atlas, and G. scintillans does appear in there on Plate 80, Figure 7, and yes this does look similar (as similar as it can be to the drawing). However it does also look a bit like G. grunowii, which is shown in the same plate, Figure 6. Glyophodiscus are generally quite rare, so finding good comparison photos is a challenge. As such I’ll go with Gosden’s choice of name for now.
