Coscinodiscus sp., Carlova, unknown maker

Coscinodiscus sp.

Coscinodiscus sp. from Carlova. Single example on the slide. Unknown slide maker. Olympus BHB microscope using 450nm LED light. 63x Leitz Pl Apo 1.4 objective, oil immersion. Olympus Aplanat Achromat condenser, oil immersion, oblique lighting. 2.5x Nikon CF PL photoeyepiece. Monochrome converted Nikon d850 camera. 31 images stacked in Zerene (Pmax).

Some really nice details in the structure on this one, and it is worth looking at the magnified image. On quite a few of the slides by this maker the diatoms look almost opaque. I’ve love to know how they were prepared as they almost have the look of some metalized ones I’ve seen.

Similar to C. radiatus and C. perforatus (good discussion in Sar, E. A., Sunesen, I., & Jahn, R. (2010). Coscinodiscus perforatus revisited and compared with Coscinodiscus radiatus (Bacillariophyceae). Phycologia, 49(6), 514–524. https://doi.org/10.2216/09-03.1).

I recently acquired about 60 slides by this maker, so if you want to see others by them, search for AAAAA in the Search option at the top of the page, and I’ll include this in each of the pages for them.
