Coscinodiscus curvatulus

An arrangement of four Coscinodiscus curvatulus from Moron, Spain. Prepared by William Allott Firth. Olympus BHB microscope using 450nm light. As well as the whole arrangement I imaged them using a 63x Leitz Pl Apo NA 1.4 objective, oil immersion. Olympus Aplanat Achromat condenser, oil immersion, oblique lighting. 2.5x Nikon CF PL photoeyepiece. Monochrome converted Nikon d850 camera. Image stacks prepared in Zerene (Pmax), 57 for the image of the 3 of them, and 51 for the single diatom.

Coscinodiscus curvatulus Grunow 1878. Published in: Schmidt, A.[W.F.] (1878). Atlas der Diatomaceen-kunde Series II: Heft 15. pp. pls 57-60. Aschersleben: Verlag von Ernst Schlegel. Plate 57, Figure 33.

As is fairly obvious the slide is not in good shape. I managed to break this before I imaged it. Gutted. Silly mistake, but thankfully I was able to still image it. I was reassembling the tube to the camera after making an image with a different camera, and part of it dropped, bounced on the table and landed on my cardboard slide holder at an angle, with enough force to shatter the slide inside. I shall in future not have the slides anywhere near when doing this. I stuck the pieces which were not pulverized to another slide for imaging. Ironically the diatoms were from Moron, which sums out my thoughts about myself after it happened…..
