An arrangement of 8 diatoms from Cape Agulhas, South Africa. No makers name, but prepared by LDB Catalani. Dated January 1970 and mounted in Naphrax (R.I. 1.70). Olympus BHB microscope using 450nm LED light. 20x Nikon Plan Apo NA 0.65 objective. Olympus Aplanat Achromat condenser, brightfield lighting. 2.5x Nikon CF PL photoeyepiece. Monochrome converted Nikon d850 camera. Two images stacks prepared in Zerene (Pmax) and pasted together in Photoshop. Original arrangement is linear, but I have changed this to 4 and 4 to avoid a letterbox image here. Slade has been damaged at some point and the pieces stuck to a blank slide to keep them together.
The diatoms are (1-4 top row, left to right, 5-8 bottom row, left to right);
1. Biddulphia pulchella (This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Biddulphia biddulphiana (J.E.Smith) Boyer.).
2. Biddulphia pulchella (girdle view).
3. Triceratium junctum (This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Biddulphia juncta (A.W.F.Schmidt) A.Mann.).
4. Navicula aspera (This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Trachyneis aspera (Ehrenberg) Cleve.).
5. Arachnoidiscus ornatus.
6. Triceratium antediluvianum (This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Amphitetras antediluviana Ehrenberg.).
7. Climacosphenia moniligeria (spelt monilligeria on the slide).
8. Navicula crabro (This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Diploneis crabro (Ehrenberg) Ehrenberg.).
