A strew slide from Bory, Hungary (now Slovakia). Good variety of species. Prepared by Samuel Henry Meakin. Mounted in Styrax and dated September 1942. Olympus BHB microscope using 450nm LED light. 63x Leitz Pl Apo 1.4 or 40x Leitz Pl Apo NA 1.00 objective, oil immersion. Olympus Aplanat Achromat condenser, oil immersion, oblique lighting. 2.5x Nikon CF PL photoeyepiece. Monochrome converted Nikon d850 camera. Image stacks prepared in Zerene (Pmax). Couldn’t use the 63x objective over the majority of the slide, so went with the 40x for most of the diatoms. Identifications are based on discussion with Jakub Witkowski and “Beiträge zur Kenntniss der fossilen Bacillarien Ungarns / bearbeitet durch Josef Pantocsek” (available here).

Actinoptychus szontaghii. 63x Leitz objective. 41 images stacked. This looks to be a good match.

Auliscus hauckii. 40x Leitz objective. 24 images stacked. This looks to be a good match.

Surirella fastuosa ? 40x Leitz objective. 19 images stacked. Not too familiar with Surirella species, so have left this one with a question mark.

Mastogloia splendida. 40x Leitz objective. 21 images stacked. Looks to be a good match.

Navicula latissima var. captita ? 40x Leitz objective. 38 images stacked. This looks to be a good match but there are a lot of different Navicula species mentioned for Bory, so I am leaving this with a question mark.

Navicula sp. ? 40x Leitz objective. 32 images stacked. View from the underside. Couple of possible options based on the Pantocsek book – Navicula turgidula, Navicula lyra var. hungarica. I like the look of the N. lyra var. hungarica one, but this is not mentioned as being present at Bory.
