Various unlabelled slides, RH Taylor (?)

This page cover a few slides which came unlabelled, so no information on the species or locations. There were no makers names either, but based on the mounting and who and when I got them from, I think these were by RH Taylor. Any ID’s presented are my ‘best guess’. Olympus BHB microscope using 450nm LED light. These were a cheap buy, given the lack of details, and I think I spent around £6 to get all of them.

First up is a bit of a mystery.

Unidentified diatom (aberrant form ?)

40x Leitz Pl Apo NA 1.00 objective, oil immersion. Olympus Aplanat Achromat condenser, oil immersion, oblique lighting. 2.5x Nikon CF PL photoeyepiece. Monochrome converted Nikon d850 camera. 56 images stacked in Zerene (Pmax). Couldn’t get close enough to use the 63x Leitz Pl Apo objective. Really not sure with this one, and current thoughts are that it could be an aberrant form. So I will leave it as unidentified at the moment.

Next up is an arrangement of Aulacodiscus archangelskianus.

Aulacodiscus archangelskianus, 10x Nikon Plan Apo NA 0.45 objective, brightfield
Aulacodiscus archangelskianus

As well as the arrangement I imaged one using the 40x Leitz Pl Apo NA 1.00 objective, oil immersion. Olympus Aplanat Achromat condenser, oil immersion, oblique lighting. 2.5x Nikon CF PL photoeyepiece. Monochrome converted Nikon d850 camera. 69 images stacked in Zerene (Pmax). Couldn’t get close enough to use the 63x Leitz Pl Apo objective. Aulacodiscus archangelskianus Witt 1886. Published in: Witt, O.N. (1886 ‘1885’). Ueber den Polierschiefer von Archangelsk-Kurojedowo im Gouv. Simbirsk. Verhandlungen der Russisch-kaiserlichen Mineralogischen Gesellschaft zu St. Petersburg, Series II 22: 137-177, pls. VI-XII. Page 154, Plate 6, Figures 11,12. Homotypic synonym: Tripodiscus archangelskianus (O.N.Witt) Kuntze 1898. Heterotypic synonyms: Aulacodiscus tuberculatus Pantocsek 1889, Tripodiscus tuberculatus (Pantocsek) Kuntze 1898, Aulacodiscus singiliewskyanus J.W.Barker & S.H.Meakin 1944. Next a strew slide.

Strew slide (similar to Pensacola Bay)

10x Nikon Plan Apo NA 0.45 objective. Olympus Aplanat Achromat condenser, brightfield lighting. 2.5x Nikon CF PL photoeyepiece. Monochrome converted Nikon d850 camera. Single unstacked image. Nice clean mount. Diatom species present remind me of those at Pensacola Bay, USA.

Next is a single diatom.

Eupodiscus sp. (E. radiatus ? )
Dot pattern from one of the original images

63x Leitz Pl Apo NA 1.4 objective, oil immersion. Olympus Aplanat Achromat condenser, oil immersion, oblique lighting. 2.5x Nikon CF PL photoeyepiece. 11mm removed from the tube to the camera to increase the field of view slightly. Monochrome converted Nikon d850 camera. 70 images stacked in Zerene (Pmax). There was a faint dot pattern visible in the original images which wasn’t preserved in the stack.

As for species, I think this is a Eupodiscus sp. probably Eupodiscus radiatus. Eupodiscus radiatus Bailey 1851. Published in: Bailey, J.W. (1851). Microscopical observations made in South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. Smithsonian Contributions to Knowledge 2(8): 1-48, 3 plates.

Next are two diatoms, one directly on top of the other.

Auliscus sp. and Stictodiscus sp.
Emphasizing the Auliscus sp.
Emphasizing the Stictodiscus sp.

40x Leitz Pl Apo NA 1.00 objective, oil immersion. Olympus Aplanat Achromat condenser, oil immersion, oblique lighting. 2.5x Nikon CF PL photoeyepiece. Monochrome converted Nikon d850 camera. For the full stack of the two 57 images stacked in Zerene (Pmax). Couldn’t get close enough to use the 63x Leitz Pl Apo objective. On top is an Auliscus sp. and underneath a Stictodiscus sp. Two more stacks were processed to try and emphasize each of those. Not sure as to species.

Finally, an arrangement of three Auliscus sp.

Auliscus sp., coverslip damage, 4x Nikon Plan Apo NA 0.20 objective, brightfield
Auliscus sp., 20x Nikon Plan Apo NA 0.65 objective, oblique lighting
Auliscus sp. (A. pruinosus ? )

Three Auliscus sp. arranged in a row. Some issues with the mountant, and it has yellowed, and the coverslip is very cracked. As well as the arrangement I imaged the middle one using the 63x Leitz Pl Apo NA 1.4 objective, oil immersion. Olympus Aplanat Achromat condenser, oil immersion, oblique lighting. 2.5x Nikon CF PL photoeyepiece. Monochrome converted Nikon d850 camera. 50 images stacked in Zerene (Pmax). As for species for this one, maybe Auliscus pruinosus, although that is very tentative.
