Slightly different post this time, as the images aren’t stacked and the diatoms are fragments. Slide labelled as Triceratium odontella (more on this in a minute), mounted in Styrax. No makers name but this was prepared by Samuel Henry Meakin. Olympus BHB microscope using 450nm LED light. 63x Leitz Pl Apo 1.4 objective, oil immersion. Olympus Aplanat Achromat condenser, oil immersion, oblique lighting. 2.5x Nikon CF PL photoeyepiece. Monochrome converted Nikon d850 camera. Single unstacked images, with minimal cleaning up of the sensor dust, to show the features present on the main diatom fragment.
Ok, back to the name. The slide says Triceratium odontella, but as far as I can tell there is no Triceratium odontella diatom. Looking back through older documents, it seems that Triceratium and Odontella were sometimes used synonymously with odontella being placed in brackets after Triceratium. I suspect this is not being identified as ‘Triceratium odontella’ but that Meakin though this was a ‘Triceratium (odontella)’ species.
