Diatoms from Newcastle, Barbados, HWH Darlaston

Diatoms from Newcastle, Barbados, 10x Nikon Plan Apo NA 0.45 objective, brightfield
Coscinodiscus sp., Barbados

An array of diatoms from Newcastle, Barbados. Mainly Coscinodiscus sp., but a very nice Cestodiscus superbus. Prepared by Herbert William Hutton Darlaston. Olympus BHB microscope using 450nm LED light. As well as the array I imaged the one which was half over the red coverslip ring using the 63x Leitz Pl Apo 1.4 objective, oil immersion. Olympus Aplanat Achromat condenser, oil immersion, oblique lighting. 2.5x Nikon CF PL photoeyepiece. Monochrome converted Nikon d850 camera. 30 images stacked in Zerene (Pmax). Instead of my usual 450nm filter, I used a Newport 650nm 10nm FWHM for this one, to make the red ring go transparent. There was of course a hit to resolution as a result of that.

Not sure what this is, although I think it is a Coscinodiscus sp. of some type. A few possibilities from Schmidt’s Atlas – C. convexus (SA Plate 60, Figure 15), C. grandineus (SA Plate 60, Figure 16), SA Plate 58, Figures 13,14, no name. Basically, not sure. Any ideas, please let me know.
